RA Introduction: Meet Jelle Koersen

2013 Jelle KoersenFor students living on campus, there are certain individuals who have a continual influence upon life in the dorms. These people are the Resident Assistants. From helping build community to planning fun floor events, an RA is always around to help dorm life go smoothly. This year’s RA’s are doing a great job, and write-ups like these are the next best thing to getting to meet them.

The RA for Second Timmer this year is Jelle Koersen, a sophomore pursuing Intercultural Studies. Jelle also represents the international community on campus, as he is originally from Kamperveen, Netherlands and lived for the past fourteen years in Listowel, Ontario. Because of this, a few students affectionately refer to him as “Canada”.

Jelle’s theme for Second Timmer this year, The Attributes of Faith, comes from 2 Peter 1. He chose this theme after searching the Scriptures seeking to strengthen his call to service and what to do with his life. He realized that these are important questions, but an even more important one was, “Am I adding to my faith?” Jelle hopes his floor theme will be an everyday reminder of this question and encourage the men on his floor to pursue goodness, knowledge, self control, Godliness, brotherly kindness, and love.

Concerning floor events, Second Timmer has had some fun this year. They had a “Water Balloon Slingshot Launch Thing” which had a good turnout and everyone had fun with, even though at times it was hard to aim! The floor also enjoyed a Movie Night watching Gran Torino, and engaged in some good discussion afterwards sparked by the deeper themes of the film. They look forward to more fun events in the future!

Jelle hopes to influence his floor this year through getting to know the guys and just being a friend they can trust and go to, creating a safe community.
Putting life into perspective, Jelle reminds us that ultimately God holds our eternal joy with one of his favorite quotes from C.S. Lewis: “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.” It’s always interesting to know what’s going on in the dorms; and “getting to know” the RA’s for the year paints another picture of life on campus.
