Return to Liberia
July 9, 2013
Recently Drs. Richelle White and Judi Ravenhorst Meerman traveled to Monrovia, Liberia to continue curriculum work on the long-standing collaborative social work program between Kuyper and Calvin Colleges and Mother Patern College.
The work centered on the field practicum portion of the program—a 400-hour, two-semester field experience in a professional social work setting, which incorporates a weekly seminar to review and critically analyze each student’s experience. Students complete this portion of their studies during their senior year.
As part of the work, Drs. White and Ravenhorst Meerman together with the Director of Field Practicum at Mother Patern, also spent time evaluating student success at three field practicum sites—Shalom Inc., Touching Humanity in the Name of Kindness (THINK) and E.S. Grant Mental Hospital, and field seminar curriculum. .
While in Monrovia, Dr. White had the opportunity to minister to a group of 100 girls between the ages of 11-18 with whom she shared inspirational thoughts. She said that the opportunity for ministry in Liberia “…reminded me of Paul’s words, ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has known what God has prepared for those who love him.’ (1 Corinthian 2:9). I am excited for what is yet to come in my continued relationship with the people of Liberia.”
