Housing and Amenities

Housing

Dorms Girls One of the best parts of any college experience can be the relationships formed and the sense of community experienced while living on campus. Kuyper College offers a choice of comfortable, well-maintained, campus housing with Schaal Hall, Timmer Hall, and Holt Apartments. All three residential facilities are handicapped-accessible.

The accommodations at Schaal and Timmer halls are suites-every two living areas share one bath. Each living area includes two desks, two extra-long beds (bunkable), and dressers.

Holt Apartments are for upperclassmen and married students. Each apartment has two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom, and a kitchen, and can house up to five people.

Housing Policies

To maintain a sense of community that results when upperclassmen are part of the on-campus atmosphere, Kuyper College requires that full-time, unmarried students live on campus unless any one of the following criteria is met:

  • The student has junior status or higher.
  • The student is at least 21 years old.
  • The student is at least two years beyond high school graduation.
  • The student lives with immediate family (e.g. parents or grandparents).
  • The student has requested and received an exemption from the director of student life.

Students who do live on campus must commit to at least one full semester in either a residence hall or campus apartment. The College's housing agreement lists specific guidelines for on-campus living.

Students may live on campus until they are 25. Students 25 or older who desire to live in a residence hall must obtain prior approval from the director of student life. Contact Cisco Gonzalez, director of student life, at cgonzalez@kuyper.edu or at (616) 988-3702.

Residence Life

Womens Dorms SevenMembers of the Residence Life staff don't just oversee residential facilities. They live among students, promoting unity and personal and spiritual growth. Resident assistants organize social activities and spark intellectual discussions. RAs are also there to lend an ear and offer advice to students going through difficult circumstances.

Students should feel free to approach their RA with any question or concern they have about Kuyper College. For more information on the Residence Life staff, contact Michelle Greydanus, resident director, at mgreydanus@kuyper.edu or at (616) 988-3654.

Common Areas

Multi Use Room Common areas open to all students-residential, nonresidential, and nontraditional-include the lounges in Schaal and Timmer residence halls and the large lounge area in the Academic Building just outside Zondervan Library.

Another common area is the campus Rec Room, which features a big-screen TV and DISH satellite offerings, table tennis, pool tables, foosball, and other fun activities. All students are also encouraged to take advantage of the Boonstra Fitness Center.

Koinonia Kafe

The Koinonia Kafe is a great place for students to relax, unwind, or meet in a study group.  The Kafe also offers a variety of specialty coffee drinks, as well as snack and small meal options.  If you are wanting to pick up some Kuyper College gear, such as apparel or gift items, the Kafe is a stop you'll want to make!  If you would like to contact the Kafe staff, please call (616) 988-3677.

Dining on Campus

Cafeteria Student ProfMealtimes at Kuyper College are special times. We don't just break bread together-we break the rules by having faculty and staff members eat together with students. This promotes both a sense of community and opportunities for feedback and lively discussion. And, all nonresidential and nontraditional students are cordially invited to eat in the dining hall as well.

On-campus meals are provided by Creative Dining Services, which strives to provide nutritious and flavorful meals for the Kuyper community. There are always many options to choose from, including hot entrees, a salad bar, and a sandwich bar. There are also themed meals as well, such as pasta nights, special holiday fare, pizza bars, and more.

All students living on campus must subscribe to a meal plan. Meal plans are available for five, 10, 15, or 20 meals per week. Exemptions from the meal plan must be approved by the Business Office.

Commuting students also may purchase meal plans or individual meals. And even if they don't have a meal plan, commuting students are still invited to bring their lunches and eat in the dining hall with the rest of the community.

A small kitchen off of the dining hall is provided for all students, but it's especially handy for commuting students. There you'll find a stove, a refrigerator, microwaves, toasters, and vending machines.

Students living on campus may prepare snacks in the kitchenettes on their residence hall floors and may prepare meals or snacks in the main lounge and apartments. Food trays are available for students who are ill. Students may contact a resident assistant or a roommate to make arrangements to have them picked up.

Special sack lunches may be requested from the food service manager for field-education assignments, off-campus classes, or for during regular working hours. To make arrangements, call (616) 988-3636.

Special Diets

Students placed on special diets for medical reasons may make arrangements for meals that fit their needs. The College's staff dietitian is on campus several times each semester to review upcoming nutritional trends and to talk about special diet concerns.

Guests are welcome.  Personal guests and other visitors may join us for a modest per-meal charge. Breakfast is $4, while lunch and dinner are $5.
