On May 19, 2020 President Harris wrote a letter to eligible students with instructions on eligible uses of the funds.

  • Eligibility for students was established on April 23, 2020 by the Director of Financial Aid, by identifying those who would be eligible to file a Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) form whether one had been filed or not, and Need was determined on May 12, 2020 by a cross functional committee consisting of the Director of Financial Aid, CFO, VP for College Advancement, and President, as well as information received by the College Retention Committee. Secretary DeVos’ letter encouraged prompt assistance to as many students as possible.  Our students universally experienced additional living and educational adversity stemming from the stay-at-home order and significant change in course delivery method, prompting the committee to unanimously award aid to all eligible students.  We have continued to follow up with students to assess their ongoing needs related to coronavirus hardship.
  • Instructions were sent by email to all recipient students and also printed and enclosed with paper checks to recipient students with this text:

“The U.S. Department of Education requires that this $1,000 payment “shall not be used for any purpose other than (your) expenses related to the disruption of (your studies) due to coronavirus, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care.”  By keeping these funds, you agree that these funds will be used for, or, are a reimbursement for, the above stated purposes. If this is not the case, please immediately return the funds, and we will reallocate these to other qualified students.”

On May 20, 2020, these funds were distributed to all 85 eligible students for a total disbursement of $85,000
