Nikki Thompkins Named Head Coach of Women's Basketball

Nikki Thompkins Head Women's Basketball Coach

Kuyper College has announced the appointment of Nikki Thompkins as the next Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball program. A Grand Rapids native and former professional player, Thompkins joins the Cougars with more than two decades of playing and coaching experience throughout West Michigan and beyond.

A graduate of Grand Rapids Creston High School, Thompkins played collegiately at Central Michigan University from 1991 to 1994, where she was a forward-center for the Chippewas. She finished her career with 1,258 points and 780 rebounds and holds the program record for career field goal percentage at 54.3 percent, a mark that still stands today.

Thompkins was known throughout her playing career as an undersized post player who competed against taller opponents through fundamentals, conditioning, and competitiveness rather than size alone, a style that would later inform her approach to coaching and player development.

After college, Thompkins played professionally for eight years. Her career began during the early years of the WNBA, and she trained and competed in camp with the league’s Detroit Shock during that formative period. She went on to play internationally for several seasons, with stops in Israel, Portugal, Switzerland, and Turkey.

Following her playing career, Thompkins remained active in the West Michigan basketball community as a coach, trainer, and mentor, working with players at multiple levels across the Grand Rapids area.

She is the founder of Big Nik Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and its affiliated AAU program, BNB Basketball, which has become one of the region’s established options for elite youth skill development. Through the organization, Thompkins has built a program that pairs on-court training with academic support, including structured homework assistance, as well as community service opportunities for participating athletes.

That approach — pairing competitive development with off-court accountability — is expected to carry over directly into her work with the Cougars.

Thompkins expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity, saying, “I am beyond excited to start my head coaching journey with Kuyper College. Grateful for the opportunity to serve, lead, and impact both on and off the court! Go Cougars!”

“We are pleased to welcome Nikki Thompkins to the Kuyper College family,” said Tyler Whitcomb, Director of Athletics. “She understands what it takes to succeed at the highest levels of the game, and her commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes fits well with Kuyper’s mission.”

Thompkins is expected to bring her recruiting experience and player-development background to the program as she begins building the Cougars’ roster for the upcoming season. Her ties to the local basketball community are expected to support recruiting efforts across the greater Grand Rapids area in the coming months.

Additional details on Thompkins’ coaching staff and program plans will be announced at a later date.
