Ora Et Labora: Jennifer Scully

As a realtor, Jennifer Scully knows that not everyone in her field is honorable.

“Realtors are known for being one step away from used car salesman,” Scully told the Kuyper Community on March 23 as part of Ora Et Labora, a weekly time where speakers come to campus to talk about their work and how their faith impacts that work.

As a Christian, however, Scully believes she must be different. 

“I let my faith and core values guide me, which really sets me apart. The second my paycheck becomes more important than doing what’s right, I’ve failed,” she said. 

When Scully works with a client, she trusts God with the outcome of that interaction. 

“For me, it’s always about doing what’s best for the person in front of me. I know God will work out for them what is supposed to happen,” Scully emphasized.

Trusting God for the ultimate outcome is a principal that guides Scully in her personal life as well. 

“My faith has always been a huge part of my life, but it really came into play for me when I lost my 11-year-old son in a drowning accident. At that point, I had to trust that God had a purpose for my pain,” Scully said.

When her marriage ended following her son’s death, Scully again had to trust God. “That was a huge turning point for me,” she recalled. She felt led to take on a different, more stable role at her firm until she could see where God would lead her next.

Now happily remarried, Scully has stepped back into sales. And she encouraged her listeners to rely on God’s direction when they encounter struggles of their own. 

“Ask for the guidance. Don’t ask for a specific outcome, ask God to show you what to do next,” Scully said.
