Easter Reflections
Thinking back over the Easter season, I am so thankful for God’s blessings and especially for my family.
I was tucking my 5-year-old granddaughter, Ember, into bed one night. We usually have a song or a story before going to sleep. This particular night I told her that Easter is coming soon and we are all going to church and getting together afterwards at Aunt Kim’s house. I then asked her if she knew what Easter was about.
She wiggled with excitement and told me that it was about Easter egg hunts and getting a lot of candy.
I then proceeded to tell her about the Easter story and how Jesus was not in the tomb anymore…He is Risen! She then said, “How did He get out?” Yet another opportunity to tell her about Jesus.
Easter Sunday came and we had a wonderful Easter service and then headed over to my sister’s for lunch. We were getting ready to pray and my son, David, was asked to pray. He usually prays and then Ember will repeat what he says. Today David suggested that Ember lead and we would repeat what she said!
I didn’t know if she would turn shy and not want to do it but then I heard, “Dear Jesus, thank you for this food.” Everyone around the table repeated Ember’s words. There was a pause and I thought maybe she was done, but then she said something to the effect of “Thank you for dying on the cross for our sins.”
I tried to repeat but found myself choked up at her words. Then she said “and thank you that you are not in the tomb anymore.”
When I told her the Easter story while tucking her into bed, I didn’t know if she would comprehend my words or if she was really even listening.
I thank God for my family and for salvation. It again reminds us that we need to start telling our children and grandchildren about Jesus from day one.
