Sent With Scars: Chapel Reflection with Darrell Delaney

It can be easy to believe we have to be flawless to be useful to God. But as pastor, podcast host, faith-driven leadership coach, and 2005 Kuyper graduate Darrell Delaney reminded the Kuyper community in Vos Chapel on September 23, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“God uses scars as evidence of grace. God doesn’t wait until we are fully healed to use us; He uses us in spite of the challenges we come from,” Delaney said during the twice-weekly chapel service.

Drawing on his own childhood—growing up with a mother struggling with addiction and a father often overseas with the military—Delaney emphasized that our past does not disqualify us from serving God.

“When you surrender your wounds to God, they become a witness to His grace,” he said.

Turning to the story of Jesus’ post-resurrection appearance to His disciples, Delaney pointed out how God meets us in the very places where we try to hide.

“Jesus knew they were protecting themselves from the Jewish leaders, and He knows that we put ourselves into our own kind of locked rooms to protect ourselves from the world’s pressures,” he said. “He appears behind our defenses to let us know He’s bringing peace.”

Just as Jesus’ scars became proof of His identity, Delaney added, our own scars can serve as a powerful testimony.

“They’re not liabilities anymore—they can become your credentials,” he said. “They show others how God can help us with any vice, pain, or suffering.”

Following God, he continued, is more like using a compass than reading a map. The destination isn’t always clear, and the path can feel uncertain. But we can trust that He will use even our pain for a higher purpose.

Delaney closed his message with an invitation: “Picture Jesus plucking your scars—whatever they may be—from your outstretched hands.”
