Jeanne Clery Act*
Choosing a college is a significant decision for students and their families. Along with many other factors, such as academic, financial, and location considerations, campus safety is also an important concern for families. In 1990 Congress enacted what is now referred to as the “Clery Act” in memory of student Jeanne Clery who was killed in her dorm room in 1986. The act requires colleges who participate in Federal financial assistance programs to disclose campus crime statistics and security information annually.
