The Great Investment of the Holy Spirit: Chapel Reflection with Al Moss

During a recent season of difficult family decision making, Al Moss chose to engage in an ancient spiritual practice: fasting.

Kuyper’s Director of Faith Formation shared the lessons he learned during that 21-day journey with a group of students, staff, and faculty gathered in the Vos Chapel on April 7 for a twice-weekly service.

“In this fast, I decided to do my devotions on the Holy Spirit, and I relearned some things about His part in how we experience resurrection life in Jesus,” he said.

Reflecting on Scripture passages he used in that study, Moss highlighted some of the ways the Spirit leads, encourages, and transforms us on our spiritual journeys.

Too often, however, we trust our own strength, knowledge, and understanding, rather than relying on that guidance, he told the audience.

“The image I was given during my fast was of a clogged pipe. I felt God was showing me that, when I try to do everything myself, I get in the way of Him using me to bless others,” he added. “That vision gave me a new sense of my need to rely on the Spirit of God.”

For these reasons, Moss encouraged his listeners to remember that the Holy Spirit is just as worthy of praise as the other members of the Trinity: God the Father and God the Son. His power and presence are a taste of the fully restored life we will experience after Christ comes again, and we are resurrected.

“He gives us the hope and encouragement to be able to live out the Gospel and the calling He has given each of us, and we can’t do that without the Holy Spirit,” he said.

“God has made a great investment in us, and we shouldn’t take that lightly.”
