May 15, 2015
On the evening of April 24th, family and friends of Kuyper graduates gathered to celebrate the 2015 commencement ceremony during which each graduate received a candle-holder and the charge to “Go! Let your light shine!”
The commencement speaker, Rev. Eric Schalk (2002) has long been a part of Fourth Reformed Church, starting as a Youth Director while still a student at Kuyper. Rev. Schalk also played an instrumental role in starting New City Neighbors, a not-for-profit partner ministry of Fourth Reformed Church serving the Creston neighborhood of Northeast Grand Rapids. His life is a very good example is of the kind of shining light that Kuyper students bring into the culture. As Executive Director of New City, he and a staff of volunteers work to restore and develop community, serving at-risk youth, teaching and modeling entrepreneurship skills and working on urban renewal projects such as a community garden. Following Rev. Schalk’s inspiring example and address on Hebrews 12:1-3, students were able to hear from one of their peers, 2015 pre-seminary graduate, Jaewon Park, a student from Korea.
In this night of celebration of their hard work, students were blessed with the inspiring words of a Kuyper graduate who had gone before them with a similar heart and training, while they were inspired by a fellow graduate as they now embark on their post-graduation journey of Kingdom building work.
