At the beginning of the school year, led by a student worship team who sang “God, Great God,” the Kuyper College faculty, dressed in their full academic regalia, filed down the aisle of the Vos Chapel into the midst of the assembled community. The Kuyper student body, faculty, staff, and members of College’s board of trustees joined together to worship and glorify Christ through the tradition of excellent scholarship. Dr. Patricia Harris, Kuyper’s Provost, explained: “Convocation marks the beginning of the academic year in…a regal and worshipful way. It communicates that we are serious. We’re serious about our worship. We’re serious also about our scholarship and our teaching, and those things come together in convocation.”
After the processional, Dr. Nicholas Kroeze, President of the College, welcomed the assembly, and after much prayer and singing, Dr. Harris introduced new faculty and staff members.
Brian Telzerow, Professor of Youth Ministry and Youth Ministry Program Director, gave the convocation address. He focused on how those who have graduated from Kuyper serve as a cloud of witnesses to students during their training as they seek to serve God now and after graduation.
Following the address, a Confession of Faith, led by Curt Essenburg, Director of Student Life, a Prayer for Students, led by Yanelis Castillo, Student Body President, a Prayer for Faculty and Staff, led by Pastor Rick VanderWall, Kuyper College’s chaplain, as well as a closing biblical charge from Matthew 5:13-16: “You are the salt of the earth…” by President Kroeze, served to close the program.
