Dr. Gary Burge Visits Kuyper College
October 13, 2017
Dr. Dan Kroeze, Professor of Biblical Studies, and the Bible and Theology Department were pleased to welcome Dr. Gary Burge to Kuyper’s campus on Wednesday, October 5.
Dr. Burge, former professor of New Testament at Wheaton College and current visiting professor of New Testament at Calvin Seminary, is the author of the NIV Application Commentary on the Gospel of John (Zondervan) being used in the course on the Gospel of John offered at Kuyper this semester. Dr. Burge is a sought-after speaker on John’s Gospel, Jewish context in interpreting New Testament Scriptures, and the Israel/Palestine conflict.
During his visit, Dr. Burge first delivered a moving chapel talk centered around gratitude. He began with the story of the ten lepers in Luke 17, and closed with a story about Coptic Christians in Egypt with whom he has personal relationships, detailing how their grace-and-gratitude-filled response to persecution, bombings, and other terror attacks is a resounding witness to the unbelieving communities around them.
Following Chapel, Dr. Burge took over the teaching for a session of the Gospel of John course and provided a detailed look into women as witnesses to Christ in that NT Book. He then opened the floor for an in-depth Q & A on the entire book and insightfully engaged questions from students and staff alike.
