Kuyper Spring Break Trip

March 15, 2017

A group of students led by Kuyper Student Life’s Kalee Devries, traveled to Chicago for the annual Kuyper Spring Break trip.

The group spent their time at Restoration Ministries, an organization founded in 1988, who through multiple programs provides life-changing opportunities to at-risk underprivileged youth and men and women with histories of addiction and families struggling in poverty.

"By living in the houses with the program residents we had amazing opportunities to hear their stories, and build relationships," said Devries. She added that this allowed the students to see the people as image bearers of God.

The group also served in the restoration ministries thrift store, and worked extensively with the youth programs. "In addition, our group led youth group Tuesday evening leading bible studies and worship with the kids in the community," Devries said.

Devries explained the role of activities like the Spring Break trip at Kuyper. "As Student Life, we want to send students on a service trip because it really captures what our department strives to do as a whole concerning holistic development and co-curricular learning."

Devries added that the students noted past missions trips they had been involved were focused on specific tasks, but this trip was focused on relationships.  “These relationships,” she continued, “challenged the students in their walk with God and their view of his kingdom. We didn't come back the same."
