Kuyper Students in Israel
August 8, 2017
This past May, 23 Kuyper students spent two weeks in Israel during a Spring Session course—learning, while hiking the land of the Text. The college credit trip was led by Kuyper Professor of Biblical Studies, Dr. Dan Kroeze. “A journey to the Land of the Text is an experience that ushers students into the biblical story,” he said. “They literally walked in the footsteps of Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Jesus, Peter, John, Paul, and the rest of the faithful servants that God invited to play a role in His unfolding story of redemption.”
In addition to the students, 21 adults also joined the Kuyper crew on the trip. During the two-week stay the group traveled from the Azekah, where David faced off against Goliath, to Masada, where less than 960 Jewish zealots held off the Roman Army for one year; and from Engedi, where David hid while on the run from King Saul, to the Mount of The Beatitudes, where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount; as well as from Mount Carmel, where Elijah took on 450 prophets of Baal, to the many sites of Jerusalem—to name a few of the more than 40 locations visited during the study tour.
“A study trip to the land of Israel is the ideal experience to strengthen our student’s spirituality and knowledge of the biblical text,” said Kroeze. “It’s the chance of a lifetime to encounter God and His Word in ways they’ve never dreamt possible.” And the students on the trip agreed with him—April Sparks, Class of 2019 said that she is grateful to have gone on the Kuyper Israel Trip of 2017…“for the experiences, the beautiful views, the friendships that were strengthened, and the new relationships that were made. I was expecting to grow in my knowledge of the Bible, and I did, but I was not expecting to know myself better or to be more aware of God’s presence through the hikes, lessons and times of worship.” Jacob Patton, Class of 2019, echoed Sparks words when he said: “Through this trip God provided more than just a foundation for my faith but an entire fortress to defend my faith, build off of it, and to shine the light of the gospel into even the darkest of places.”
