Sophie Hogan Joins the Kuyper Admissions Team
Sophie Hogan is a new admissions counselor for
Kuyper College.
A Grand Rapids native, Hogan noted with a smile that she grew up close to Kuyper and went to a high school, Forest Hills Eastern, only about six miles southeast of the College’s campus on the East Beltline.
After high school, Hogan did a Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Discipleship Training School (DTS), a six-month program blending classroom learning, small group activities, personal reflection, practical service and community living. In fact, Kuyper is now home to a YWAM DTS, though it was not yet in existence when Hogan took her gap year.
As part of her DTS, Hogan traveled to France, Japan and Taiwan, an experience she looks back on as “rewarding, challenging and transformative.”
She then went on to Liberty University where she studied psychology.
“I always knew I wanted to study psychology because it had been fascinating to me growing up, and I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else,” she said. “I knew it would be a versatile degree as well, and I would have some flexibility as far as careers.”
Her experience at Liberty is also what drew her to the admissions counselor job at Kuyper.
“I absolutely loved my time at Liberty, and I really enjoyed so many of the classes I got to take. Going there inspired my love and passion for Christian higher education, and that is why I was so interested in the job here at Kuyper. Kuyper has an amazing reputation here in town, and I wanted to be a part of a collaborative environment that does great work and prepares students so well for the workforce.”
Because she began this summer, Hogan is especially eager for the start of the 2024-25 academic year.
“I’m excited to sit in on some classes, learn more about the students and faculty and guide prospective students in their journey as they enter the world of higher education,” she said. “I believe that what students choose to do after college is one of the biggest decisions they will make in their entire life. I want to help students make the right choice for them and feel comfortable and confident in the process of starting this new stage of life.”
In her free time, Hogan loves reading historical fiction, collecting records, going to concerts, travelling and creative directing photography projects with her photographer husband.
